Some Scottish Brands
I am just back from London and I was in Mayfair, where some of the most upmarket brands in the world have outlets. Tiffany, Givenchy, Dior – you name it
And there were a couple of luxury brands were there. Johnsons of Elgin, who supply upscale knitwear have a place in the Burlington Arcade, surely one of the world’s most prestigious shopping malls.
Mackintosh of Coatbridge are nearby – they manufacture upmarket raincoats and jackets.
We hope to look into these companies in later editions and also Anta.
Anta’s range of luxury home furnishings and gifts are designed in Scotland using Scottish materials and made in Fearn, in the north east of Scotland
Anta was set up in 1984 by Annie Stewart and all the goods are still designed by her.
The look is distinctly Scottish, drawing on the grid design of tartan. The danger with using tartan as a base is that the look can appear hackneyed, but the Anta look avoids that.
Part of the magic is that an Anta product manufactured last week can sit next to something designed twenty years ago and you cannot tell the difference. Anta is still producing classic products, year after year.
Annie Stewart puts this down to using the same palette of colours.
And certainly there is a lot to say about this company which is quintessentially Scottish.
They have recently got permission to develop a former church into an apartment hotel
Anta House has a fabulous location a few hundred yards from Princes Street and it will be kitted out entirely in Anta products – which will all be offered for sale, You can stay in the hotel and then buy the cushions, cutlery and carpets which have been on show.
